WAGE TAX AND LEVY

Probably one of the first questions which the Minister in Charge of Unemployment (the Right. Hon. J. 0. Coates) will be called upon to answer when the Unemployment Amendment Bill Is under discussion in the House of Representatives will be in reference to the amount which the tax of Is in the £ may be expected to produce (says the Wellington Evening Post).

The task of arriving at an estimate is a difficult one, for the last year or so has seen a very considerable fluctuation in salaries and wages, but it is stated that the Government hopes to collect, by way of levy and tax, a sum in excess of £3,000,000. This amount will be the sole revenue at the disposal of the Unemployment Board, a.s the amending Bill provides that there is to be no subsidy from the Consolidated Fund. The extent of the board’s revenue, of course, will depend in a large measure on the proposals of the Government in reference to further salary cuts. A further reduction of 10 per cent, in salaries and wages would naturally have the effect of reducing by about 10 per cent, the amount available for the relief of unemployment. •'
