TAUHAXGA FIFTY-SIX YEAKS AGO. From the Bay of Plenty Times of April Ist ISTti we take the following interesting items; “Captain Turner. District Engineer left town on Wednesday morning last for Waitekauri jOhiucmuri) for the purpose of starting the survey of the line between that place and Katikati. to which we alluded in our last issue.’’ “Captain A. Crapp. of the Public Works Department, arrived overland from Poverty Bay on Thursday afternoon, and left again yesterday morning for Waitekauri to join the District Engineer, Captain Turner.”

“A meeting of the ratepayers in the Tauranga North Township Highway District, was held in the Temperance Hall on Thursday evening, for the purpose of electing a trustee vice Mr M, Hannon, resigned. There was a large attendance of ratepayers. Mr E. G. Norris, Chairman of the Board, opened the proceedings and called upon the meeting to elect a. Chairman, and proceed to the business of the evening. Mr Mitchell was elected chairman. The Chairman having called upon the meeting to nominate a candidate, the following gentlemen were proposed: Air Peter Shaughnessy, proposed by Mr T. D. Wrigley, seconded by Mr Brenna.n.

Mr James Salt, proposed by Mr Maxwell, seconded by Mr Watson. Mr Richard Rhodes, proposed by Mr Redmond, seconded by Mr McCaw.

Mr John Chadwick, proposed by Mr Firth Wrigley, seconded by Mr Montgomery.” On the resultant ballot Mr Shaughnessy was elected.
