TE PUKE NOTES.

ATHLETIC SPORTS MEETING. The To Puke ‘Athletic Club held its annual sports meeting yesterday bn I lie recreation ground. The weather was perfect and there was a large attendance. A most enjoyable programme of music was dispensed by the Tauranga Municipal Band under the baton of Mr McMahon. Results were as follows;

100 YARDS RACE, Boys under 15 years (Cup donated by the Herbert Smith Trust).—R. Nicols 1. T. Garforth 2, R. Pope 3. Nicols broke away at the start with Garforth close behind. Pope came up fast to finish third. Time 12 3/I.os.

100 YARDS MAIDEN RACE. First heat: Donbvan 1, Jim Hayes 2, F. Stewart 3. Stewart leaped away and led the field for fifty yards. Then Donovan came through fast, closely followed by Hayes, who finished close up. Time 10 4/ss.—Second heat; \V. Pile 1. Hodgson 2. O’Driscoll 3. The result was never in doubt. Pile took charge at the start and finished 5 yards ahead of Hodgson. Time 10 4/ss. Final: Jim Hayes 1. Donovan 2, Hodgson 3. Pile, whose chances were good, false started and pulled out. Hayes beat Donovan at the tope by inches. Time 11s.

BUTCHER CUP, 75 yards, for Schoolboys under 15 years.—R. Nichols 1, T. Garforth 2. Nicols left nothing to doubt, loading all the way. Time 12 is. ONE MILE CYCLE RACE.— First Heat: R. Tuck (180yds.) i, IV. C. Green (135yds.) 2, J. Roberts (155 yds.) 3. Tuck rode a good race from the start and kept well ahead of the bunch all the way. Green spurted in the last lap and beat Roberts by half a wheel for second place. Time 3m 42 l/5s. —Second Heat: C. Graham (155yds. 1 1, K Pilkington (220yds. 1 2, Cooney (00ys.) 3. Cooney forced Hie pace in the last three laps to finish half a length behind Graham who beat Pilkinton by half a. wheel. Time 2m 44 l/5s. — Final: Pilkingion (64yds.) 1 Graham (66yds.) 2, Green (125yds) 3. In the second to last lap Tuck fell on the bowling green corner, bringing Roberts with him. Both escaped injury. Won easily. 120 YARDS HANDICAP. — First Heat: Gamble (12Jyds) 1, Wilkins (10yds) 2, Dutton (lliyds.) and Blackburn (6iyds) tie 3. Gamble was pressed all the distance by Wilkins, who ran a close second. Time 11 l/ss. Second Heat: Webber (12 Jyds.) 1, Kellett (13Jyds.) 2. J. Pennington (10 yds) 3. Webber beat Kellett by a matter of inches. Time 11 Js. —Third Heat; Pjle f 14i yds.) 1, Hayes (13yds.) 2, Cunningham (11yds.) 3. Pile again won easily and had three yards to spare. Hayes and Cunningham finished close together. Time 11 2/5s. —Final: Pile (14iyds.) 1,. Cambie (12J yds.) 2. Blackburn (6Jyds.) 3. Pile got away to win by more than his start off Cambie, who finished second. Time 11 3/ss. GIRLS’ RACE, 75yds (Herbert Smith Cup).—E. Robertson 1, G. Ryan 2, P. Garforth 3. The winner ran well and finished well ahead of her opponents. Time 10s. TWO-MILE CYCLE RACE. —First Heat: Lauder (300yds.) 1, R. Tuck (320yds.) 2, Aberhart (115yds.) 3. Tuck was hard in this event and held his position for six laps until deposed by Lauder, who came up fast on the inside and won by a good length. Time 5m 42 4/ss. —Second Heat: Green (245yd5.) 1, Graham (225yd5.) 2, Cooney (115yds.) 3. Green led the field for the majority of the laps and in the eighth dropped back behind the bunch. In the last lap he came up fast on the outside and won by a wheel from Graham. Time 5m 43 3/ss. —Final: R. Tuck (320yds) 1, Lauder (300yds.) 2, Cooney (115yds.) 3. Tuck held his start all the way and won by a length and a-half. Time 5m 42 3/ss.

220 YARDS HANDICAP.— First Heat: Wilkins (17yds.) 1, Kellett (24yds.) 2, Gamble (22yds) 3. Wilkins took charge h’om the start and came through fast to win with Kellett and Carahie pressing hard. Time 21 1 /5s. —Second Heat: Pile (25 yds.) 1, Dutton (19yds.) 2, Pennington (18yds.) 3. Pile-got'well away and won easily. Time 21 4/5s. — Final: Pile (25yds.) 1, Wilkins (17 yds.) 2. Cambie (22yds.) 3. A good race. Time 20 4/ss. HALF-MILE FLAT HANDICAP.— E. Dye (42yds.) 1, F. Dye (48yds.) 2, Tanner (40yds.) 3. Won by a narrow margin. Tanner was about syds. behind the second man. Time 2m 2s.

HOP, STEP AND JUMP.—Dono van, 39ft,91 inches, 1,

THREE MILE CYCLE RACE.— Cooney (135yds.) 1, Green (325yd5.) 2, Aberhart (135yds.) 3. Cooney rode well and finished in front. Pratney the scratch man, retired in the tenth lap. He rode well until then, but had little chance with his handicap. Time Sin 405..

OBSTACLE RACE.— Donovan 1, Pile 2. ONE MILE FLAT HANDICAP.— E. Dye (60yds.) 1, Grose (100yds.) 2, Cambie (100yds.) 3. The winner ran a pretty race and finished fast 10yds. ahead of Grose, who boat, Cambie by syds. Time 4m 455.

440 YARDS FLAT RACE.— Wilkins (38yds) 1, Webber (45yds.) 2, Dutton (36yds.) 3. Wilkins came through at the 220yds. peg and took the lead. Webber finished fast and secured second place, Dutton being a verv close third. Time 49 4/ss. HIGH JUMP.—Donovan, oft 3in„ 1.

MARRIED LADIES’ RACE.—Mrs Hakaria 1. Mrs Skipper 2. SINGLE LADIES’ RACE.— Miss Tanner 1, Miss Bridger 2.

A r very enjoyable dance was held in the Capitol Theatre in the evening, when all the trophies and prizes which had been won during the day were presented by Mr H. O. Cooney, Patron of the Club. The dance selections were played by Chapman’s Orchestra and extras by Mrs C. O. Riddell.
