FRENCH EMBARGO.
MORE COMPETITION FOR FRUIT IN BRITAIN. London, March 12. 'France’s ban on the import of foreign fresh fruit, on the ground that a fruit disease has been imported with American apples will affect Australia,n apples both directly and indirectly. Australia’s direct export to France is small but there are re-exports through London and Antwerp.
Australia House fears that the ban will divert £2,000,000 worth of Ameri can apples to Great Britain. These, owing to the difference in seasons, would not coincide with Australian arrivals but would be competitive to an extent, because they would swell the supplies in cold storage.
