PAGE FROM THE PAST.
TURAXGA FIFTY YEARS AGO. Wo hear a good deal nowadays about “the Government not being ready with its legislation,’’ but one often wonders whether times have changed at all in this respect, and whether present day legislators are such much worse than those of yore. The following paragraph in the Bay of Plenty Times of March 23rd, 1882, probably throws some light on the problem; “Very little has leaked out” says a. Wellington message as-to the nature or extent of the preparations being made by the Government for the ensuing session. It is known, however that the Consolidation Bill held over last session is in the hands of the printer. As to the chief measures of policy nothing has been settled, but the subject will be taken in hand as soon as the members of Cabinet can be got together.” The Civil Service was also receiving attention at the time for we read;—“lt is rumoured that among further Civil Service reforms in contemplation is an extensive remodelling of the Public Works Department, , and the amalgamation of its branches concentrating it more under a single head, and materially reducing expenses.” The following paragraph is somewhat interesting from the same issue;.—
“An important sale of properties in Section 1, Town of Tauranga, is advertised to be held by Messrs Turner and, Buddie on April 11th. The properties comprise the late residence of Mr M, J. Brennan in Hamilton street, Mr Firth Wrigley’s residence, and Mr J. C. Young’s residence in Harington Street.’’
