Mr Rocke O’Shea, Registrar of the Auckland University, was a visitor to Tauranga at the week-end.

Messrs Percy Williams and F. E. Flatt, of Pacroa, spent the week-end at Tauranga.

Mr Ernest Sommervillc, of Wellington, has been spending a few days in Tauranga.

Miss Schramm, of Wellington, is a visitor to Tauranga.

Mr and Mrs P. Gilchrist, of Tc Aroha, were visitors to Tauranga during Easter.

Mr E. J. Gifford; formerly clerk of the court, at Tauranga, has been staying with friends here.

A well-known patron of the Turf, Mr Osborne Raymond Wise, died at Oamaru on Sunday. For fifty years Mr Wise was a leading personality in racing in the South Island.

Mr John Clark, a well-known sheep farmer, who recently donated to purchase radium, has died at Gisborne.

Mr Charles Elgar, of Fcatherston, a prominent- sheep fanner, and a well-known racehorse owner, collapsed at luncheon at the Tauhcrenikau Uaoedourso cm Saturday and died immediately. Mr Elgar was attending the Wairarapa Club's races. Mr Alf Kerr, of Taumarunui and formerly of Tauranga, was a visitor to Tauranga yesterday. Mr G. S. Moody has been re-elect-ed President of the Opotiki Branch of the. Farmers’ Union.

Mrs Gallagher and family, rf Pukekohe, are spending a holiday in Tauranga.

Capt. R. Fowler is acting master of the Northern S.S. Company's Waka and ,has with him as chief officer, Mr Rutledge, late of the Ngapuhi. Capt. Fowler was recently in command of the Hauturu, on the West Coast run.

A gift afternoon tea was_ tendered by about twenty-live friends, to Miss Margaret Johnston at Guildford, on the occasion of her approaching marriage. A very enjoyable time was spent, and at the conclusion “He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” and “Auld Lang Syne,” were sung.

The Hon. G. W. Forbes, deputyleader of the Government, will arrive in Auckland to-morrow, and stay until Saturday morning. Mr Forbes will go north on Saturday, and will return to Auckland on May 1.

Van Dusen,, of Vancouver, who is interested in shipping aud the timber industry, is a through passenger to Sydney by the Aorangi. He will probably visit New Zealand before his return to Canada.

One of the most prominent, perhaps the most picturesque, women of the Maori race in modern times, Mrs , Staples Brown, has died at her residence in England, aged about 60 years. Mrs Staples Brown, who was a member of the Arawa tribe, was , known the w’orld over as Rotorua's most famous guide, Maggie Papa- " kura.

The death is announced from Wellington of Mr W .A. Kennedy, late Wellington manager for the Union •- Steam Ship Company.
