SEVENTH CITY
EXPECTATION OF PALMERS'! ON NORTH. I An announcement that Palmerston North will shortly attain the status of a city has been made by the Mayor, Mr A. J. Graham. “The population of the urban area is now 20,800 odd according to the latest statistics,” he said last week. “As far as the town itself i a concerned, I anticipate that it will reach 20,000 early in 1930. I hope in the new year to receive a proclamation from the GovernorGeneral declaring Palmerston North a city. There are now six cities in the Dominion: —Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Nelson and Wamganui. The lastnamed town attained the dignity about four years ago by passing the 20,000 population mark. Nelson, which ha® a population of considerably leas than 20,000, was constituted a city by Royal Commission in the early days of the settlement;, shortly after the creation of the Anglican Bishopric. Other towns which are approaching a population of 20,000 are Napier and Invercargill.
