HEAVY GALE AT GISBORNE
UNION COMPANY STEAMER DRIVEN ASHORE CREW LAND SAFELY. Gisborne, Oct-. 24. A heavy southerly gale sprang--lup during the night, and the Union Company’s steamer Kahikari, from southern ports was driven ashore on the Waikanae beach about 5 a. m. The crew landed safely. Gisborne, Oct. 24. The Kahikari lies head on to the sandy beach on an even keel with heavy breaker® thumping astenn. Since coming ashore aho has drifted 100 yards towards the ’ breakwater. , The crew landed in the ship’s boat, the captain remaining aboard. The weather in, the roadstead is too rough and no attempts at, salvage will be made to-day. POVERTY BAY RACES POSTPONED. Gisborne. Oct,. 24. In consequence of wet boisterous weather the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s races have been postponed till to-morrow.
