SIX MAKO SHARKS CAPTUR ED. A party comprising Messrs Richards (Hillsdene), Guodsell (Hillsdene). E. J. Munro (Tauranga', G. Toogoud 1 Welling, ton), t'hampucy ((late Ihn and Captain Vernon (London), aboard the launch Naomi, enjoyed splendid spoil oil Mayor island on Sunday and Monday, they captured six mako sharks, many kmgiish. and innumerable schuapper, hapuku, terakihi, cod. moki, trumpeter, and other small fish. Mr Richards hooked a big mako, which fought lor fortytwo minutes and then unhooked and escaped. Mr Goodsell then caught a mako. weighing 1081 b, which gave a spectacular display and was killed after an hour's light. Immediately after Mr Richards hooked a mako and simultaneously Mr Munro another shark. After half-auTiour Mr Muuro's fish got away, hut- Mr Richards was successful in bringing his fish alongside and gutted it. This mako weighed 1741 b. Mr Goodsell then hooked and landed a mako weighing L'i’-Jlb. Mr Munro hooked a mako near the hack fin. ibis shark battled for a time and broke the swivel of the tackle- it then made straight for Mr Richards’ line and took the bait. It continued to tight for half-au-hour and was evenually killed. Mr Muuro's tackle being recovered. Its weight was 1071 b, and it leaped fourteen times clear of the water.

Mr Good sell followed by landing a make of 1321 b. The above-mentioned five mako sharks were caught on Sunday, The fish were taken ashore and were photographed on Monday morning. On Monday up to J p in. the anglers devoted their attention to the smaller fish. Soon_ after easting the lines for big fish Mr Kichards hooked a mako which fought low down in the sea and was" lauded after half-an-hour. Its weight was KiOlb. During the afternoon the party sighted a swordfish about two miles away, and'on Sunday a swordfish was recognised as feeling the bait, but did not hook. School fish were exceptionally plentiful and an enormous mako was seen on the surface of the water but would not bite. Several mako came round the launch and on, two occasions leaped out of the water and snapped oft the greater part of large fish which were hanging on the side of the vessel.

Kahawai, the bail tor big fish, was plentiful. Captain Vernon spent most of his time in exploring Mayor Island and was delighted with the trip. During the various times of the playing of the big fish Mr Fletcher manoeuvred the launch in such a way as to earn the hearty appreciation of the sportsmen.

The Naomi is out at Mayor Island to-day with another

party. MR ZANE GREY’S PARTY, Whitianga, Jan. 7 Fishing at Mercury Island, Mr Zaire Grey secured two more makes, weighing 3001 b and 4501 b respectively, and Captain Mitchell lauded a hammerhead shark weighing 4001 b. The following day Mr Grey. secured two more marlin swordfish, weighing 2001 b and 2201 b-, while Captain Mitchell secured a marlin swordfish .weighing 2800-■ Mr Zane Grey has now 1.0 fisli to his credit and Captain Mitchell has six, a total of 10 fish in nine days.
