THE LOCAL POLL

! MR. C. I'-. MA(.MILLAN AGAIN j RETURNS!) WITH SUBSTANTIAL j .MAJORITY. Coulter 2875 j Macmillan SlOl j As was generally anticipated, .Mr. ! Macmillan proved an easy winner Ur the Tauranga seat, which he has held since the by-election in March, 1023. On that occasion -Mr. .Macmillan defeated Sir Joseph Ward by a substantial majority, the polling; on that occasion being: Macmillan, 4236 Ward, 3134 *"At the General Election in the preceding December the la.be Sir William Hernes was opposed by Mr Lawrence Johnston, the polling on that occasion being: Herrics 4488 Johnston 3018 It was hardly to bo expected, therefore. tin electorate with suck a pronounced Reform leaning for so many years, should Forsake the party at tho I ■present juncture, when the new leader, the Hon, Mr Coates, is still untried. When the first returns cam© to hand very few people Tad gathered in the ( Triangle, and by the time it was dark enough to show the results on th© screen a good many of the booths wore available. ‘ _ . , The first was from Muir s ' Gold Reefs three minutes after . six, and this was followed lapidly . by Maungatapu, and then the returns Yame freely. It was quickly evident that Mr Macmillan was scoring heavily over his opponent, , and that ho would retain the seat j g with a substantial majority. It j 0 was not unl i! nearly ten o’clock, f however, that the final result was g known, As soon as the returns were complete Air Macmillan ap- t pea red on iho balcony of the Star Hotel. Me was greeted with cheer- e ing. Addressing the crowd gath- > fi end in the Triangle he said he s , could not find words fn adequately C : express his thanks to the electors n for tin: very magnificent vote that n bad been recorded in bis favour, j c< Th-' vote was one of which the Re- | el

lonn Government could be extremely proud. The contest, had been a strenuous one, both for himself and his opponent, who had given him a very good run indeed. He then called for three chOers for Mr Coulter, which were heartily given, and Mr Macmillan then moved a hearty vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, Mr J. Gifford, lor the manner in which the poll had been conducted, and the prompt manner In which the returns had come to hand. Mr Coiuter was also greeted with cheers when he appeared on the balcony. He desired first of all to heartily congratulate Mr Macmillan on his very big win, which was undoubtedly most decisive. He had enjoyed the contest immensely, and had had a great experience, from which he believed he would derive great benefit. He extended his hearty thanks to all who had helped him during the past few weeks. During that time h© had made many friends, and felt that he was no,longer a stranger to this side of the range. Tauranga had not seen the last of him, as he considered it one of the best seaside resorts in the country, and he hoped to have an opportunity, during the summer at any rate, of again -visiting it, provided of course, something was done to the Kaimai track. Both candidates could not win, and if he had done nothing* else he had at leastgiven the electors an opportunity of showing their preference at the ballot box. Mr Coulter then called for three cheers for Mr Macmillan which vere heartily given, and he also econded Mr Macmillan’s motion of vote of thanks to the Returning officer, for whom three cheers were iven. , Tho Returning Officer advised us his morning that so far he has intilation that 000 absentee's have voted Isewherc for this electorate. In this instance, as in all others, it will ho imo days before the final declaration in bo made, and although it can make o difference her©, these absentee votes lay turn the election in several instant's. It is difficult t<> recall any election j which excited so little apparent inter- | est in die district, cither in regard to | the local contest, or throughout the. Dominion. The excellent arrangements J ma*le by the Returning Officer. Mr JGifford, enabled the polling to bo con-1 tinned at all the booths throughout the day without hitch of any kind. Jb e r.ew arrangements for recording absent ■votes resulted in an unprecedented rush of electors from other electorates wishing to record their votes. Blovt over, these were dealt, with, and n<> delay occurred. RETURNS FROM ELSEWHERE "With the returns from tb© Tauranga ■booths progress reports from other districts were also coming to hand. The expeditious bantiling of these by the local post office staff enabled [hem to be ; ’phoned for exhibition on the screen without delay, and although the ieturns were still incomplete at midnight sufficient were to hand to indicate that t be Government had secured a sweeping majority. PRIME MINISTER’S MESSAGE IMPLICIT FAITH IN DOMINION’S FUTURE (Per Prigggu-Afisdci at i on.) w e iii n gtoij. Nov. 5. The Hon. Mr Coates issued a message to' the people of New Zealand last night thanking them for the support given. “The result,” he said, Ms very gratifying, and the size of the majority particularly comforting? I have implicit faith in the future of the Dominion and, it will ho my aim and that of the Government, to serve it to the best of our ability and power. Now the verdict has been given I appeal to all sections to sink their differences and pull together for the sake of the country. I will lose no time in putting my policy into operation, , and will push it with all reasonable speed. The result has evidenced an earnest desire for stable Govern ment, and I give full acknowledg ment to all those who supported the 1 Government candidates and assisted with their time and energy. No stone will be left unturned to manage and develop New Zealand for the good of the community as a whole.”
