PUBLIC OPINION

( HAMHER OF COMMERCE MEETING. (To the Editor,) Sir,— I wish to correct the report of Monday's meeting of the ChamLcr of Commerce in your issue "of Tuesday last. .The report indicate^that I merely took exception to Mr Whiting's remark that the motion re stopping place in the Strand was a trick, the Chairman appealing to the meeting to say if Air Whiting should withdraw his remark. M hat really took place was this: In objecting to the remark I requested the Chairman to have the remark withdrawn, which he could not see his way to do. I them stated that if the remark were not withdrawn I would ask the Chairman's permission to leave the meeting, as 1 considered that only a trickster could be guilty of trickery. Several gentlemen, including the Chairman, indicated their wish that I should stay. In the course of a short discussion between myself and Air Whiting, he (Air Whiting) repeated that the motion still appeared! to him as a trick, but that if the meeting so desired lie would withdraw his remark. The Chairman at this stage only made the appeal reported. There certainly .seemed to he a negative, but no vote was taken. The motion, which gave rise to the incident, was carried, as reported, by fifteen votes to seven, a majority of two to one, thus apparently voting for a. trick. Thanking you for your snace. —I am, etc.. : 31. AT ANN. Devonport Road, July 9, 1924.
