DANGERS OF BOTULISM

Reuter’s Telegrams, London, Dec. 20,

The report of the Food Investigation Board dealing with canned fruit and botulism states that if botnlins gain access to fruit which is canned the temperatures of the process which has so far been adopted arc likely to be inadequate t'o kill all the spores present, but any vegetative forms and toxins probably would be destroyed. The facts suggest that while perfectly sound tins may contain sports of botulin s they will not set up botulism unless toxins are also present, apart from the rare possibility that spores are present in enormous numbers. If the ting contain toxins they will show obtrusive signs, be blown, or the con tents have an offensive odour, which should lead to their rejection.
