SMUTS PLEADS FOR LEAGUE OF NATIONS
PURPOSE TO DEAL WITH INTERNATIONAL TROUBLES.
tßy Ca ds-Press Association Copyright.) Aust.—N.Z. Cable Assoc. Rec. May 31, morning. Capetown, May 30. Replying to a motion in the Senate by ex-President Roitz, that the Union of South Africa give notice of withdrawal from the League of Nations,
General Smuts said the League of Nations had little to do with the Peace Treaty nor was it formed to carry out the treaty. The purpose of the League was to deal with international troubles which might arise, in the future. The Government had no intention of getting out of the League, as it believed the future peace of South Africa was bound up in it. The day might come when South Africa would want the help of the League. General Smuts added: '‘For the sake of a yearly contribuiton don’t let us cut off from the rest of the world but bear our share of the burden.” The motion was withdrawn.
