Bay of Plenty Times MONDAY, SEPT. 25rd; 1922 QUEEN CARNIVAL.

Except* during the supreme eft,Tts of war-lime, we doubt if any undertaking for raising money lot the public''good in Tauranga, has over met with such surpassingly succckAul result as the recent juvenile queen carnival to gather funds for the improvement 01 the placing folds in the Pomai.ii. The Hockey Association, which set 11 sell to early ihroiiL'li the elioft, hyped to riti.se possibly .r2''o or oven T 250, and some people scorned toy think thev were some what, otet-sanguine., even in contemplating bo much as liiai, The result announced on satuuiav night, a surprised and delighted crowd in the Triahglo, showed that no less than £G4‘2 had i) rais--ffi. ml nitT'c twice as much a> the promoters dareu to liic-.un oil The pomaiu Board is 1,, lie nuigratuiated on this splendid issponw u. the appeal on its behalf. which will enable it not t-nly

to fully complete the work of greatly improving the northern playing Hold, both from the players’ and spectators’ points of view, but will leave a very substantial surplus for the initiation of some further considerable scheme of improvement, upon which, of course, the Hockey Association will naturally be consulted. In the early days of the Dominion, when the public reserves to which, the somewhat quaint name "domain” was officially given, were first set apart , our legislators did not unfortunately, seem to think it necessary to provide any scheme of assured finance, fob the administration and improvement thereof. Hence many domains, such as that here, which had been set apart as public parks and recreation grounds, for some fifty year's past, have, in many cases had very little improvement indeed, in their half century of existence, for the simple reason that fees for grazing horses and cattie were all the revenue that, could Ire raised, and thus the very means whereby it was raised prevented any but; the crudest aiqd most simple form of improvement. However, the days of such, enforced, stagnation and backwardness for the Taurauga Domain would now seem to be over, as some sports bodies seem now fully alive to its potential value in adding to thei r enjoyment, and it may , be hoped that others will shortly follow the splendid lead given by the Hockey Association. There is room fo r many other considerable and cost ly improvements, such. a.s the proper formation of the playing area in the southern part of the Domain, the prevision of adequate and mcdernly equipped dressing rooms for teams of players, besides provision for accommodation for officials, committees in charge of gatherings, etc., and of a fair sized grandstand for spectators, which would also prove a revenue-making condom, besides adding greatly to the enjoyment and comfort of the public. Wo cannot dose these few lines without extending our hearty congratulations to the Chairman, Mr C. F. J. Biggs) and the Secretary, Mr if. ‘Gray, of the Hockey Assoicatiou, on the fine result achieved under their leadership and guidance, and to whom the initiation of tho whole scheme, was, we understand, almost entirely due.
