Mr, Austen Chamberlain, in_ presenting Sir Jas. Craig and his wife with gifts of plate from 300 members of the House of Commons in recognition of Sir James’ attainment of the Ulster Premiership, said that so far as the Imperial Parliament was concerned it would uphold Ulsters liberty, and would second (o the best of its power Sir Jas. Craig’s every effort in the interests of the peace and prosperity of Ireland, North, or South, of whatever class or creed.

Lord Birkenhead, referring to pre-war controversies, declared that there was nothing he then did and little he said which he would not repeat if the risks to Ulster were repealed. Sir 'Jas. Craig, replying, said that what ever side others might take, he refused ever to take any except that of Great Britain and the Empire.
