1596 COUNTY MAP

The Royal Geographical Society has secured a rare map of Kent, bearing the title "A New Description of Kent, Divided into Fyvo lathey thereof. . . By the travayle of Phil Symonson, of Rochester, gent 1596." It was the first printed map of the county. Margate appears as “Margat Baye,’’ Broadstairs as “Brodstaycrs," and Rams : gate is spelt as it is now. Dover was Dover Haven, but there has been little change in the other names.
