TAURANGA GOLF CLUB

OPENING OF NEW LINKS AT

GATE PA

ihe iaurauga Golf Club was favoured with beautiful weather for the opening of their new links at Gate Pa on Saturday. There was a very large gathering of players and friends, including representatives of local bodies and of the various sports committees.

The President, Mr. P. H. Roche, in welcoming all to the new links, expressed his appreciation of the large and representative attendance, which promised well for the success of the Club. He apologised for the unavoidable absence of Colonel Ward (chairman of the Gate Pa racecourse Domain Board) of Mr. C. E. Macmillan, and of Messrs. Fallwell and Robbins, who had purposed being present as representatives of the Bowling Club. He also expressed the thanks of the Committee to Mrs. Corrigan for a donation of standard metal cups for the greens, and Miss Burd for making and presenting Hag markers. Mr. Roche concluded by wishing all present an enjoyable afternoon, which he trusted would be the foreunner of many a happy hour spent on the Tauranga Golf Club’s new links.

His Worship the Mayor, Mr. Dive, speaking for the visitors, congratulated the Club on the very nice course they had made, and ex- s pressed his pleasure at being present at the opening of the new links. Although he did not claim to be a golf expert, he fully appreciated the importance to the town of such institutions as the Golf Club, and their value in promoting the health and happiness of the citizens. He would be glad to assist the club in any way in his power in providing a course suitable to the needs of the town. He concluded by wishing the Club every success. Mrs. Roche, wife of the President, then drove the first ball, after which players made up their partners, and the links were fully occupied until dark; some forty players taking part in the games. Very favourable comments were passed on the course, which is a very sporting one, and when the improvements are completed, it will compare very favourably with any nine-hole course in the Dominion.

Afternoon tea was served to visitors and players in the large dining room, which had been very prettily decorated, and the thanks of the club are due to the ladies who so successfully carried out this important portion of the day’s function. The thanks of the Club are due also to/the Borough Council ; for the loan of the steam roller; to the Racier Club, for permission to use their buildings; to Mr. McKinlay, lessee of the domain, for his cordial cooperation and assistance; and to Mr. Wood for the loan of roller. During the afternoon the President presented to Miss Gavey a golf club, won -by her in a mixed foursome handicap last season, her partner being Mr. Butts.
