COUNTY ROADS.

Supervisor's Report.

Mr W. J. Gray, supervisor, submitted the following report to the last meeting of th Taur«,nga County Council:— "

Last month, owing to favourable weather, we had a great deal of repairs carried out and new work pushed on.

Katikati

AH the men available (3) have been mostly in Hikurangi Gorge, but three times this number could now be proiitbly employed. I met the assistant engineer there over toad deviations on March 13 and it seems to me that it is useless talking of toad deviations until the Public Works Department decide and get started un further deviations of the creek, especially the question as to whether it will be put through a spur in a tunnel, or will they carry the railway over it twice on bridges, It 13 no use going any further at present. As work on the line is now stopped, it appears to me that ths road for about six miles should ba at once improved. This is a aerious matter, owing to the expense necessary.

Te Puna

Very little was done in this Riding last month, except finish up on Kaimai, and the getting of material on the ground for the concrete culvert at Wairoa.

Wainrapu

As mentioned last month "about 6 miles cf Oropi Road wa3 very bad. This has been improved and Bhould be finished up this weeK. -

Maketu

A great deal was done in this Riding last month.

Xhe metalling from the Waiari Bridge towards raengsroa was commenced, and I trust we will be able to connect it with the. Diece at- the junction of the Kflnana Landing Road. Toe question of a grant or even the promise of one has been tried every way we can think of, a«d the District Road Engineer had assisted us veiy much. Through him, I think we will get £100, bit the matter is not quite settled.

The Tumu-Kaituna drains have been cleared by the Drainage Board. There is a stretch of the Kaituna Road oppo site Mr Dudson's that should be clayed at once. It 13 very uneven and soft. Those portions that were clayed ate wearing very well.

In regard to the road in the Hikuraiigi Gorge, Cr Stewart thought that application should be made to the Public Works Department for a grant for. the road.

The Council decided—That the Chairman, Cr Stewart and the Supervisor approach the Public Works Department for assistance in repairing the Gorge Koad.

Cr Matthews, in referring to the. metalling irom the Waiari Bridge eastwards, said Mr Gray's suggestion was the best that could be rrwde. He moved: That the nro<?ecution of the work be left in Mr Gray's hands.— Carried.

It was decided that the claying of the road opposite Mr Dudson's be deferred.
