GERMAN ATTACKS NEAR HULLUCH.
British Consolidate Positions.

Sir John French reports:—
Several German attacks were delivered on Wednesday north-west of Hulluch, Severe fighting lasted all day long. We maintained all our positions, except on the extreme left, where the Germans gained 150 yards of a trench. We firmly consolidated our positions. Hostile counter-attacks Live now weakened. The Germans fired a mine ou Wednesday afternoon near Hooge, gaining a footing on our frout line southward i of the Men in road. Counter-attacks i on Thursday recovered all except a small portion of a trench. The situation ou the British front on Friday was unchanged. Aircraft Active. Our aircraft last week was active. Seventeen air combats were fought, in enly one of which a British machine was worsted. We broi.ght down a Taube inside j our lines on Thursday, Our airmen attacked and damaged tho main railway Hues in fifteen places. We partially wrecked five and probably six. A train took fire in the locomotive sheas at Valenciennes and caused considerable interference with the Gernipn railway organisation.
