Bay of Plenty Times MONDAY, SEPT 13th, 1915 THE FREEZING WORKS.

TO-MORROW the three experts who are inquiring into the question as to the most suitable point in the Bey of Plenty at which to locate Freezing Works, will reach Tauranga. The three gentlemen in question were engaged as the result of a meeting held recently at Matata and attended by representatives of all the coast districts, with the exception of Opotiki. Naturallly the matter is one of first importance to the whole district, rfhd, if one may judge by the opinions expressed at the Matata meeting, the almost unanimous feeling throughout tha Bay of Plenty is that the all imI portant question of a site should be settled by experts with a thorough knowledge of the business and it 3 re--1 quirements and unbiassed by any local

considerations. From the point cf view of harbour and shipping facilities we feel that the advantages of Tauranga over ary other place in the Bay are so obvious, and will so present themselves to the experts, that it is quite unnecessary for us to do more than state the fact. It only remains therefore to consider —assuming that the matter of shipping facilities is of first importance in determining the locality of the wurks —where the exact site shall be in the vicinity of Tauranga harbour. While there may be a dveraity of opinion as to where this sholud be it will be obvious that if it ia situated too'far from the harbour it would render the works of little value to this end of the district inasmuch as stock would have to be railed to the works for killing and th< n backagain frozen for shipment. This double charge would be a severe handicap. The fact too must not be lost sight of that from cay Oropi to Whakamarama there is an area ol approximately 100,000 acres now being brought in, which must all at no distant date be carrying stock. Then there is the vast area from here to Katikati, and at Katikati itself, that cannot be debarred from consideration. It will be a matter for extreme regret if the experts leave the ditrict without having seen this vast area. If after seeing it they should decide that it is not of sufficient importance to be a factor in determining the site, Tauranga can loyally the decision. No doubt the experts will seek all the local information possibe, and this, the community can, rest assured, will be furnished by the representatives of the local bodies and others interested

in the project. The least difficult matter will be to demonstrate the advantages that the harbour possesses over any other between Auckland and Wellington.
