ECONOMIC PRODUCTION.

To the Editor,

Sir,—l vvas pleased to notice that j you have given an .extract from the ad- ' dreßs made by Mr Fred. Greville, at the banquet.tendered to the Premier in South Taranaki on his recent visit to that district. Such remarks, are well' worthy of the attention of all tho9e interested in the progress and improvement of our dairy industry. There i* no doubt that this industry has made rapid strides within the last few years, end yet I do not hesitate to Biy that the industry is only in its in- | fancy; "The old order changeth and must give place to the new." and I know of no district that will derive greater benefit from the improved made of dairy farming than the Bay of Plenty, if it will pay to give £70 for an acre of land in Taranaki for dairy fawning, what can be dbne at Tauranga to aecompish this? We require more industrious, intelligent farmers. We want to know how to conduct the .'"soiling" system, and we require a better class of dairy cow. We have both the land and the climate, and, a* stated by Mr Greville, "when the "farmers came to adopt the soiling system they would find it possible to keep two cows to the acre., and to keep them better than they do now." If one farmer, in South Taranaki can makeover £14 from the milk of each of her cows and the farmer at Inglewood can only produce £5 per cow there is some great mistake somewhere. The Subject is worthy of consideration. I am at a loss to undertsand the reason of the apathy displayed by the members of our local Farmers' Union Month after month you hear complaints - that the Tauranga farmers take little interest in the. meetings called by the committee. ' May I humbly suggest that such a subject as I have called attention to be taken up and discussed at the next meeting of the local Union. I feel sure that un- . less we bestir ourselves we shall be left far behind in the van of progress in the dairy industry of New Zealand. —I am etc., SENEX.
