WATER POWER DEVELOP. MENT.
(Per Press Association)
WELLINGTON, March 23. The Premier has announced that Government has decided to control and develop tbe water-power resources in New Zealand, and for that purpose will ask Parliament's authority to expend up to £500,000. 'lhis is to enable water power to be used for public as well as private purposes in different parts of the country. Owing to tLe heavy charges which would be made by private firms having control of waterpower the Government, after careful consideration, has decided to conticl the power itself, and to expend annually up to the sum mentioned upon its development, thus enabling users to obtain power at a rate much less than could be obtained from private under, takings.
