MONTHLY MEETING

The ordinary monthly meeting of b< the Tauranga Borough Council was — held in the Council Chambers, Wil- b low Street, on Monday evening. Clark, secretary g to the Tauranga Cemetery Trustees, « forwarding resolution passed at tne last meeting ol tfce Trustees, drawing the Council's attention to the x neglected state of the approaches to the cemetery, and asking to have c them put in thorough order at the vi earliest possible moment. It was decided— That the cemetery, t trustees toe informed that the Bor- t ough Council has agreed- tbat wh*m the County Council moves in the c matter- the Borough will co-operate. Arnold Ward, hon. custodian of the municipal flags, that he is desirous of resigning the care of the same. Owing to his fre- . quent absences from town and pressuro of work, "he is unable to devote the necessary time to the hoisting of the bunting on occasions when it is customary to do so, and would be obliged if the Council would appoint someone to take ever the property from him. Mr Ward also submitted a schedule of the flags, etc. Cr. Tunks and carried unanimously. j — Reports. — The Sanitary •Committee reported - as follows :— That the Council . request owners or occupiers of Commercial and Masonic H-otels to construct their respective drains down . to deep water. 'J hat the owners of Jot - 200, Grey Street, bo compelled r to fill in or construct drains so that j the stagnant water is thereby rek moved. Bull said he was under the - impression that the foreman's wages - had not yet been raised to 8s per f day, although the Council had exs pressed such a desire some time ago. Cr. Stuart -moved— That the fore- - man's wages be at the rate of 8s per day, wet and dry, from June 1 f last.— Seconded by Cr. Bull and car- ) rietl. | — Oidinary Business.— ■ Tenders for ne-roofing, re-blocking . and repairs to the Public Library ' were opened as follows :— J. Munro £52, J. Conway £51, C. Wood £47 W. Allely £4(5 19s, J. B. Chappell £39 10s. Cr. Adams moved— That Mr J. B. Chappell 's tender be accepted. — Seconded by Cr. Dale and carried. The usual resolution bearing. on | the striking ef rates for thfc current j year was passed. I Cr. Bull asked whether the assist- ! ant surfaceman was to be employed evury day or as a casual hand. The Mayor said that his ophviqn was that the assistant surfaceman was to to employed on every day on which it was possible for him to work. Cr>«Stuart said he did not hold this opinion. — Notices of Moiien. — Th% following notices of motion vvere" d<>alt with : — Cr. 'Wri-giJey moved— That Cameron Road be drained between Robert St. II and Mr A. Davoren's residence. In speaking to the motion Cr. Wrigley said the -water lodged on the portion of the road referred to, and it was no use attempting to carry out improvements until the water was taken off it. . The motion was seconded toy Cr. Dale. I [ Crs. Stuart, Brown and Tunks j said they would like to see laid be- j fore the Council an estimate of the ' cost ef the worK. j Cr. Southey moved an amendment — That the matter he referred to the Streets Committee to report upon. — Seconded by Cr. Brown. Cr. Stuart said he did not think was a matter Of draining the roaxS, &ut o! raising it mstea-J. Cr. IHill said he thought Cr. Stuart was right, that the road should be raised. Bull moved — That all resolutions referring to horses and cattle depastuiing. on Borough streets prioi te Septetirbt'r, 1906, be rescinded. The Mayor ruled the mctioii out of order, stating that there was ho provision in- 'The Municij>al Corporations Act cf 1900' for revoking a resolution until . the Council had passed a ix'solution or inaJe a byelaw to tnat effect. Cr. isouthey moved — That in consideration of certain monies accruing from taxing hcrsos and cattle grazing in the Borough — that can hardly be looked upon as legitimate revenue — tho Council •■consider the athisability of establishing a windmill system on the site of the present Jubilee pump or wherever it may be considered feasible. In speaking to his motion Cr. Southcy said: tlvc owners who paid taxes to run their horses or cattle should toe ■ provided with water for. their stock. In a dry summer the absence of a good supply of water was keenly felt. If the. Council agreed to consider the matter ha would move another resolution m connection with it. The motion was seconded by wDale pro forma. ■ « Cr. Wriffley said he tftought the cost of keeping* the windmill in order would be considerable. f Cr. Adams said he did not like the clause in the resolution referring to 'legitimate" revenue. Cr. Brown said a man would be constantly required to look after the windmill if it were erected. The motion was put and negatived. cd. , Cr. Southey moved— That no work, except especially authorised by the Council as a whole, be undertaken on bye-roads or footpaths until the main roads arc put in a proper state of repair. Cr. Southey^said he j was constrained to move the resolution owing to the bad slate of the main streets. He objected to the bye-roads and footpaths being dealt with when the main roads were in their present condition. Cr. Wrigley secemdedrtho motion. Cr. Brown said that the work done on the bye-roads bad been authorised by the Council.
