Sir,— l have plodded through the long Jotters of oiir. old friend, Mr G. Vesey Stewart, on County mutters. 1 am entirely-, with. -him in procuring a stone crusher for ihetallinjt our roads,, but 1 fail to see the conn*c- ; tro« between road, metal and the appointment of ai> engineer for the County. I gather .-from.: Mr Stewart's own showing that our rates will be nearly doubled r -*nd, correspondingly, will be «our subsidy next year. The Council has asked for large grants from the Government for roads and bridges, which if they get half of them, will require almost the full time of an engineer. If it is the duty of an engineer to prepare plans, . specifications, and see contracts let and carried out properly that we have in. prospect for next year, the £200 will be spent for salary. I consider this sum too little to secure a competent- man without other inducements. I have been informed of a thoroughly conir petent man enquiring after the position, whose services would foe worth double the salary offered, whoso coming here would fee a i>ecuniary loss to himself, but who considers the change from the cold south to our beautiful climatcvof Taurange on sooie clelirate member of his famUy, sufficient coi»|)en.saUon for the change. I trust the Council will not go back, on their resolution, but will appoint a permanent engineer for the County.— F am, etc..
