It is reported that Japan will withdraw from Corea at the end of the year ; it is also reported that Russia demands the cession of the island of Quelpert, off South Corea. Shanghai, May 17.— The Chinese soldiers have broken out in revolt in Shangaikwan and are looting the city from which the residents ate fleeing. The Russian press demands that a protectorate be established over Corea. Shanghai, May 19.— China objects to European control of her customs revenue as security fop a loan. London, M>iy 17. —The People publishes tho Tichborne claimant's sworn affidavit confessing himself to be Arthur Orton and in which he says he married Mary Ann Branch at Goulbourne in New South Wales. London, May 19. — Orton confesses that at the age of 14 he was apprenticed to the sea and visited Valpariso in the brig Ooean from whioh he deserted; and visited Santiago and San Franoisoo returning to England in 1851. He sailed for Hobart in November, 1852, in charge of a number of ponies consigned to Chapman, Hobart. He worked for a butcher named Knight of Hobart in 1855 and the same year accepted employment under John Johnstone, of Newburn Park, Gippsland, Victoria. He remained in the latter situation three months and then was employed by William Foster, of Borsdale station. He remained a long period at Reedy Creek diggings. London, May 19. — By a fire in a leather warehouse in Bermondsey, buildings extending over two acres were destroyed, the estimated damage is £200,000. Many inhabitants of cottages only effected their escape in their nightdresses. Shaw, Saville Co. London May 19. — The annual balance sheet of the Shaw, Saville Company shows a profit on the year's operations of £20,000. Troop ship burnt. London, May 10. — The troop ship Jumna has been burnt in the Albert docks. Commercial congress. London, May 19.— The London Chamber of Commerce invites the Colonial Chambers to join in a congress in June, 1896, to discuss the commercial relation between England and her colonies, light railways, steamships and cable communication with the Colonies and the proposed Imperial Council. The Armenian reforms. Constjlstinople, May 17. — It is believed that the Sultan will accept the scheme of reforms in Armenia submitted by the Great Powers.
