OPOTIKI.

Dance. — A return, --and farewell •fflaticp" vras^given^tb.. tbo? tjieraber.* of ; tbi Maiden' family Itr^thff large hall adjoining, the Opotiki Hotel, .on Tuesday last. fM which there tvere about 60 people present. Dancing was keptrup^untitthe small hours of morn■- ■ -ing. '- ■■'-. A .i\ ■-• ' • ; Tauranga-Opotiki Main Road. — I am informed that Mr "Grace,- M.H.R., has" obtained a grant' of £1500 for this wort and expects another of the same amount before the conclusion of this session. We may hope soon to see this necessary work pushed ahead which undoubtedly will prove a great benefit to both Tauranga and Opotiki. We seem here to be completely shut out from the outer world in Opotiki j this ' could assuredly be obviated by a gooVl coach road which would not only be a sure moans of regular " communication but would induce settlement along the coaefc. Mails. — Through the very bad weather lately the Douglas has been unable to get out and consequently has not been running her regular 1 trips, the result is that we have been a Weefc, without a mail. Considering 'thai?' it is impossible for the small steamer to make regular trips from here,; l think the requirements of Opotiki would be met by having an overland mail running twice weekly, -to arrive here on Saturda} r s aud Wednesdays. - So far our overland cornmuiTrca|ion; has been very regular and ijtfarely iS'iriore than an hour late in its .''arrival at Opotiki. Some alteration is needed and this, in may opinion, • would be the best arrangement for whole: of the coast. **■ Accident.— A man, by the name of Jock Henderson, working upon Mr TJames White's Motu road contract, met with, rather a serious accident through the falling of some rocks which caused the breaking of his leg ttnd spraining of his ankle ; he, however, is progressing favourably under . -the care of Dr Dalzell, who has lately arrived in Opotiki and commenced practicing. Business.— Judging from the large number of general stores, drapery and millinery establishments there " are in Opotiki in comparison with the number of the population Opotiki must be a splendid field for business, roughly the stocks in the above memtioned establishments will com© to between £9,000 and £10,000, not to speak of two bootmakers, three hotels, three firms of carpenters and contractors, two auctioneers, three butchers, one tailor, two blacksmiths, two tinsmiths* and two painters. -Busiriess is very much over done here in fact as much so as any place in New Zealand.
