TO-MORROW'S ECLIPSE.

Toricoitifow, September 9, a total eclipse of the sun will occur. The Hue of totality, or path of the moon'a shadow on, the earth, crosses the southern portion of the North Island of New Zealand from w©3t to east, after which it falls entirely on the ocean. Thi« eclipse will be partial for Tauranga, the magnitude being greater, howarx>r, than any which has happened for many years past. For Tauranga the phases will be : — Beginning of eclipse ... 6.46 a.m. Middle 7.53 a.m. End 9.2 a.m. Duration of totality 2 mm. The eclipao will be total at Wellington, Castle Poiut, Masterton, and at places adjacent to these positions. The phenomena witnessed during a total eclipse are unique in character. The colour of the slcy does not appear to belong either to the darkness of the night or the hue of twilight. In some places it has been noticed of a violet, in others a livid tints, the latter imparting to the human countenance an aspect which it was painful to behold. Our readers possessed of telescopes will have an opportunity of witnessing a x>henomenon rare in its occurrence. In consequence of the gloom we alluded to, the stars will shine out, and Jupiter with his satellites may be seen iv close proximity to the obscured solar disc.
