ORINARY MEETING,
The G-ate at G-reerton.— This matter cauae on for discussion, and correspondence thereon read. Sundry petitions and counter petitions were also brought up to the Council. After some valuable suggestions from Mr Sheehan, who had entered the chamber, a resolution was adopted on the motion of Cr Armstrong, seconded hy Cr Kelly, that' Mr Tuthill shall have permission to keep the gate up provided it be kept unlocked. The dissenting settler was understood to say he would test the legal position. ; County Debt. — The Chairman explained the position of the County debt to Mr Sheehan and solicited his assistance towards liquidating the same, and dwelt upon the reduction in the rates under the Crown and Native Lauds Hating Act, had, the fair proportion been paid to the Council it would now be in credit. Mr Sheehan held the opinion that the Council has a strong claim by virtue of the attitude of the Government in the matter of native lands and the exist*
