Friday. A company is being formed with a capital of £20,000, for the erection of a grand hotel.
Government purpose- converting the New Zealand Sliijppihg Co.'*-. steamers Kaikaiira and Kimutaka,. nto armed cruisers, for the protection of New Zealand ports. The Union steamship Taupo leaves; for Tauranga tomorrow, yia Napieir and Gisborne. It is stated that Mr James JohnBton of Wanganui is the successful tenderer for the Marton contract of the central railway, to the amount of £27,500., A resident of Palmers ton North, has drawn the first prize, consisting of free-hold property yalued at four hundred and fifty pounds, in Druid's Art Union, Melbourne, on Easter Monday. Several other prizes came to New Zealand. Monday. A southerly gale yesterday created great havoc in a building being erected on reclaimed land, for the New Zealand Industrial Exhibition. Between 2 and 3 o'clock, a half of the upright building came down with an immense crash, and the site now presents a most desolate appearance, covered as it is with broken timber and sheets o£corrugated iron. The damage which falls upon Murdoch and Hose is estimated at between £200 and £300. Sir Julius Yogel on Saturday, received a cablegram from the AgentGeneral, stating that the prospects of peace are less gloomy. The Government have cabled to the Agent- General to procrue.and at once forward 2000 stand of the latest military rifle (the Martini-Henry) to the colony, together with all necessary appointments. Among the divorce cases now on the tapis it is stated that a person holding a prominent business position in this town will be called on as co-respon-dent. Heavy damages are being claimed. Names for the present are withheld.
