Road to Sulphur Works. — Or Gray asked what steps had been taken to place sand on the road above named, as it was understood this was to be done when the fine weather set in. The Engineer replied that the matter was before him, but nothing had been done yet. The work was held over by verbal directions, but it was understood a contract was to be called for this work when the fine weather set in.

Surfacemen. — Or Loueh pasted whether the Engineer had brought in any report of what the surfacemen had been doing during the last fortnight. The Engineer said he had no written report. Or Maxwell called attention to the fact that these surfacemen were never seen in the town, and he thought a visit once a month would be an advantage. The Strand is very dirty, and their whole time seems taken up on the Devonport road: Ec Mr Lever's Letter. — This matter to be further held over. Transfer of Victoria Wharf.— The following communication was received in this matter from the Marine Department, dated Wellington, October 20, 1884, addressed to the Town Clerk : —

" I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the Bth inst., respecting the transfer to the Borough of the wharf at Taurahga known as the Victoria "Wharf, and which now is, or lately was, in the occupation of Mr J. Chad wick under certain conditions specified in a letter to him from this Department (No. 584—18), dated April 4, 1878. In accordance with these terms, and upon the request of Mr Ohadwick and the Borough Council of Tauranga, I hereby consent to the proposed transfer, but on the express understanding, so far as the Government or this Department is concerned, that the Borough accept from Mr Chad wick such right and title to the wharf as he now possesses, and that the Borough must exercise its powers in respect of such wharf in such manner as it may be advised, having regard to the nature of the property. Borough Council must arrange with Mtf Ohadwick for the execution of any instrument in support of the title and ail expenses in cdnnectioti. therewith, dr Otherwise' in rotation to the! prop"ds6cl. transfer, will be borne by the Borough., — William H. Or Jordan moved , the following amendment, seconded by Or Louch :— That the Clerk be requested to furnish Mr Ohadwick with a copy of lettev No. 795—41 from the Marine Department, also to request Mr Ohadwick to nominate hie valuer and state & time when he will be prepared to proceed with the valuation of the material of the Victoria "Wharf; also that the clerk instruct Mr Moss to. draw up the necessary transfer. The amendment was put and lost; four voted in favour and four against, and the Chairman gays his casting vote againi-it the amendment. The proposition by Or Gray was then put and lost. The Mayor then resumed his seat.

Communications to the Council, — Or Gray asked whether the ' members of Council had tjao privilege of seeing correspondence between the meetings of the Council, The Mayor explained the course adopted in this matter ; there was no rule, but there was a facility afforded by the Clerk of which any or every member might avail himself. MOTIONS FBOU LAST MEETING. Grazing Horses. — Or Gray moved i the resolution standing in his name, asking for the same privileges to be extended to owners of horses as has been to cattle owners. Seconded by Or Ellis. Or Conway moved an amendment to the effect that no such concessions be granted to owners of horses. Seconded by the Mayor. Carried by the casting vote of the Mayor, Suspension of words in Bye-laws re Carrying Passengers and Goods.. — Cr Gray moved the resolution standing in his name on the above alteration in clause 69 in the Borough bye-laws. Cr Louch asked "whether this Council had power to suspend. Eesolved that the matter stand over to next meeting to give the Council time to oonsider the matter. NOTICE OF MOTION, Night Watchman. — By Cr Clarebrough that in the opinion of this Council it is desirable that the nightwatchman should be appointed by and be under the control of the Corporation, and that a committee of three Councillors be appointed to make preliminary inquiries in reference thereto, and bring up a report at next meeting of this Council,
