WAIMAPU RIDING,

TO THE EDITOE 1 ,

Sir, — I would beg leave, through your columns, to make an appeal to the Waimapu electors with regard to . the coming* election for the County Council; and, anticipating 1 the objection why should I, an outsider, interfere in such a matter, I would remind the Waimapu electors that during the past 12 months both the outlying parts of the County — Katikati and Te Puke - have made the most strenuous exertions to part company with the Tauranga County Council. The first attempt in each case has failed through causes which are not insurmountable. Let mo, therefore, beg the Waimapu electors to return members j to the County Council who shall not be so entirely wrapped up in the interests of the Borough as to be indifferent to the requirements of the country districts, and the surest method of accomplishing this is to erase the name of every candidate for the County Council who is connected with the Borough government. Surely it is honor enough for any one man to have an important part to play in the management of our beautiful county town without also concerning himself with the affairs of the remote country settlers. I believe that many who joined in the late attempts to get rid of the County Council manag-oment would be rather sorry than otherwise to see the County divided. Now, I submit that the Waimapu electors have this separation question mostly in their own hands. Let them elect members to the County Council who will givo fair play to outlying districts, and the latter will not be so anxious to be rid of the County Council ; but if they elect a mere duplicate of the Borough Council, then they need not he surprised if Tauranga County should before another 12 months comprise little more than the road districts immediately adjoining 1 the town,— l am, &c, Hugh Stewart, Late Captain E.A.
