The show of hands was in favor of Karatiana. The poll takes place on the 15th instant, Opunake, Tuesday evening. The correct total result of the poll for Egmont gives Atkinson 225, Ives 73. NELSOy, Tuesday evening. Collingvrood election : Gibbs was returned unopposed. Christchubch, Tuesday evening, Selwyn election : FUzroy, Abolitionist, 24si; Reeves, old member, 230. This result caused much surprise at Chri.t.'hurcl 1 , where Rectfl was backed at long odds, The weather has been frightfully hot. Two brothers were killed by Bun troke at ' Raagiora. Invekoabqißili, Tuesday evening. Wallace election r Borstion, 76 ; Joyce, 25. Hokitika, Tuesday evening. A tremendous thunderstorm occurred on Saturday. The Wesleyan chapel was struck by lightning, which tore away the top and portion o-f the building. Wellingtoh, Tuesday evening. Smith, the man oharged with the murderous assault at the Hutt, was brought up on remand yeeterduy, and further evidence adduced. He was taken to the Hospital and confronted with the unfortunate men, Readal and Paul. Readal, who has seven ghastly wounds was sensible, and gave evidence for a few minutes, but then lapsed into unconsciousness. Paul is quite insensible.. The recovery of either is considered hopeless. Young, the other victim, who received the blow on the neck, though not out of danger, is slightly improving. One . of the witnesses yesterday said, I saw the prisoner strike .Readal, and I thought he was about lo make a blow at me. He was holding an axe with both hands over his head. I went round the corner of the whare. Prisoner did not follow, but returned to Readal, who was lying on the ground. I heard several blows ; it seemed to me that some of the bones were orushing. The prisoner further remanded till next Monday, He has changed much since he was arrested, and seems to be in abject fear or despair. It is considered very probable that Sir Julius Yogel will be elected fo-y- both Wanganu and the Thames districts.
