Good progress has been made in the last week or two with the new buildings in Clyde street. Mr J. W. H. Clarke's building is practically completed, and Mr C. Bragg (the contractor) expects to have the fittings in the shops and offices finished by Easter, and everything in readiness for the tenants. The additions fjftcthe National Bank are also in tho last stages of work, and the new portion will be open on Tuesday next. Across the road, ou Mr Begg's new building, the bricklayer are working expeditiously, and expect to have their work done before the faster holidays. Good progress is also being made with the foundations of Mr Guest's new building.

Miss Benny, of Wharetoa, had a most miraculous escape from drowning while crossing on the Tuapeka Mouth punt on Tuesday night. She was driving with her brother, and while on the punt the horse was so restless that Mr Benny got out to hold its head. The horse, however, plunged and backed till it got over the back of the punt, taking Miss Benny with it, horse, vehicle and passenger all disappearing into the river. Fortunately Miss Benny succeeded in retaining hold of portion of the trap, and Mr Benny and the puntman (Mr Neehoff), following smartly in a boat, rescued her before she had gone very chains down river. Miss Benny was taken to Mr Neehoff \s house, and it was'found ahe had sustained a broken collarbone, as well as being considerably bruised. She was, of course, suffering greatly from shock, but is now progressing favourably.
