The Bruce Herald. TOKOMAIRIRO, DECEMBER 23, 1904

I Report of Bruce CountyiCouncil, Tichborne Case, and another contribution " Out of the Letter-box " by our esteemed correspondent Grace, appear on page 3. We desire to express our sincere thanks to our subscribers, advertisers, apd customers for the curdial support extended to us during the current year, and wish them one and all a Very Merry Christmas and a Bright axd Prosperous New Year. Owing to the ordinary sale dite falling during holiday week, Messrs .Duthie and Co.'s next stock sale will be held on Tuesday, January 10th. Attention is directed to Mr M'Kechnie's announcement in another column, intimating that he has all the primest delicacies of the season on sale. On Wednesday afternoon a very severe hailstorm was experienced in the district. So far as we Can learn the fall was heaviest at I/Ovells> Flat, where it is reported, the hailstones were as large as pigeons' eggs. ' .— . Mr Swindley, Surgeon Dentist, cornet Octagon and Stuart street,. Dunedin, can be consulted daily between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. All works at reduced fees. ' Gas administered for painless extractions. Special terms for familfes. Write for particulars regarding your particular case.' The Taylor- Seddon libel action, after lasting eight days, resulted in an abortive trial, r the jury noU being able to agree on tneir findings. Dr Findlay intimated that an application would probably be made fqr a fresh trial, in Ounedin or elsewhere outside Christchurch. The Telegragh Department notifies that Christmas greeting telegrams on the 23rd and 24th inst if sent on forms specially prepared - for them the text being "Wishing you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year" will be transmitted for 6d provided the address and signature do not comprise more than eleven words. These forms may be obtained at the Telegraph office. There was a full attendance of buyers at the first Dunedin wool sales yesterday, and the bidding,- on the whole, left nothing to be desired, particularly in the case of lustrous crossbreds, which made record prices for thi3 description of wool. The best lots in this class realised from xo^d to is per lb. The following shows the rise in prices as compared with last year :— This year. Last year d. d. Crossbred 10% Bj4 Three-quarter bred ... 10^ H}4 Medium half-bred .. 10^ 8% Leicester \o% 7 Crossbred pieces ... 8^ 6 Crossbred bellies ... T l / 2 5 Roast lamb is evidently a favorite Christmas dinner for those whose inclinations or whose purses do npt run to turkey or other kinds of poultry. There was a very large entry of lambs (847) at liurnside on Wednesday, but such keenness was shown by butchers to obtain supplies that, as the sale progressed, the already high prices at which it had opened . were soon surpassed, until in some cases close on 1 8s per' head was touched. O-ie dealer said that in his 18 years' experience he had never known lambs to realise such prices at this season of the year. On the other hand, the " roast beef of Old England " appears to" be going out of favor for Christmas. Although there were a number of prime bullocks yarded at Wednesday's sale, competition was nothing like so keen for them, and the prices realised did not tend in favor of farmers and graziers. Wednesday's market also showed signs that pigs, which for the past two or three years have made splendid returns to breeders, are hardly likely to maintain their late high standard of remunerativeness. — Star. At the regular monthly meeting of Lodge St. John, 461, S.C.,heldon Thursday* the 15th inst., P.M. Bro. John Hollick was the recipient of a handsomely framed enlarged photo group of the Past Masters and present officers of the Lodge, in recognition of his long and faithful services as treasurer, from which position he has just retired. The W.M., Bro, Brownlee, in making the presentation^ gave a brief history, of. the Lodge from its inception, stating that it had many ups and downs, and that Bro. Hollick had stood by it at all times, and was still most regular in his attendance, ever ready and willing to give all the assistance in his power to further the interests of the Lodge, After several of the brethren had also added their testimony of the good work done by their esteemed Brother, P. M. Bro. HolHck feelingly tendered his thanks to the brethren for their kind remarks, and also for the thoughtful presentation, which he would »1 ways < ghly cherish. ■ ,_ J
