Fatal Accident.
» ... We regret to" "have to record the death by accident of James Fahey,! of Clarendon, which occurred late on; Saturday night when he was returning; home from Milton. He and several! others— Samuel Fryer, Wm. Wilion,; and two young boys, sons of Mr Elias Olegg, left Milton about ten minutes: past eleven o'clock. From what can! be gathered of the circumstances it; appears that Mr Fahey with the others mentioned rode as far as Mr James Duncan's ; that on reaching Mr Duncan's residence, he and Wilson went into the house and stayed for about a quarter-of-an-hour. On leaving he, mounted his horse, and the two lads Clegg, who were some distance, ahead, heard his horse trotting in their direction They stato they think Mr Fahey dismounted ; and as they proceeded on their journey they did not again see him. On Sunday morning Mr J. Duncan, junior, while going along the road, saw Mr Fahey's body on the ground. No time was lost in acquainting Constable Macßae of the sad occurrence. The body had evidently not been dragged along the road ; but it was apparent from Dr Menzies's examination that deceased had by some means sustained a heavy fall from the horse, which caused a fracture of the base of the skull. Deceased, who from his boyhood had lived in the Tokornairiro district, was a man of fine physique ; and was possessed of a kindly good nature that made him very popular among all with whom he was acquainted. For several years, past he had leased a farm on the Horse Shoe Hush estate. A widow and six y^ung children are left to mourn their loss. An inquest will be held at Clarendon to-day.
