In addition to what they make for themselves, they have imported during the List six years an average of 269,843,549 pounds of pure butter annually, for which they paid, on an average^ £12,460,555 each year. In 1896 the butter imports reached 340,250,0641 b., and for which £14,934,396 was paid. During the period named the British, in addition to butter, imported, on the average, 131,941,443 pounds of ©leomargarine annually, the average cost of which each year amounted to £3,217,^420. In 1896 the imports of oleomargarine fell off considerably, reaching only 103,704,608 pounds, valued at £2,431,717. The high tide in the importation of margarine was reached in 1892, when 146,199,200 pounds, valued at £3,600,000, was imported. The steady annual increase in the consumption of butter in Great Britain has been remarkable. It has about doubled during the last ten years. In 1886 the value of the butter imports was £7,924,061, and in 1896, as already stated, it reached £14,934,396.
