Cycling

» ■■ — ■ [By Spoke ] The Milton-Waihola road race came off on Saturday. The race was instituted by several ardent cyclists of the town, and to their credit, be it said, was a complete success ; it also shows that a club of their order should be an established f-ict in this district, where, ia number of members and condition of roads especially, everything points to the advantage of suoh a governing body. However, the afternoon was a fine one, with rather a chilly wind in the contestants' favor for the beginning >;f their journey, while by the time a start was made on the return the breeze had slightly lessened. Of the six entries, five faced the starter, and at 2 55 J. M'Leod with 20 mm. — but who essayed to start off the 15 mm. mark — and W. Gkegg (15 mm.) wers despatched by Mr A. B. Haggitt j by 3.6^ D. Marryatt (3| mm.) went off, followed in half-a-minute by W\ Alcock (3 mm.), and at 3.10 the scratch man, H. M' William, s arced hh stern chase. J. Thomson (2 uiin.) did not compete. Good Btartß were made in ail cases, although M'Leod had the misfortune to get off the track after eoing a few hundred yards, his saddla requiring to be f ightened. It was expected it would be at least 430 before the dinner turned up, but in the good tims of 1.12^ mm. — i.e. at 3.19 — D. MarryatG passed the Post, followed half-a-minure later by W. Alcock, these two maintaining their handicaps all through. H. M' William was about 2 mm. behind the winner, and would no doubt have put up much better time had he persevered. Mr T. J. Grant was handicapper, and he succeeded very well in judging the capa« bilities of his men ; while Mr Chas. Keen attended to the race at the Waihola turning point. The race— at least the start and finish — was witnessed by a good crowd of spectators, and we believe that offers of prizes have been made by several citizens if another contest can be arranged. It is reported that as an outcome of the race, a cyclist who competed has backed himself to give one of the handicap men three-quarters ot an hour's start over the same course, on the condition that the latter does nofe mount a bike till Wednesday, on which afternoon the event will come off. A wager of £5 to 6d against the scratch man been booked. Bots ! as big as "Rats !
