KAITAHGATA

(FjROM Otfß OWN, CORRESPONDENT.) ... Since last writing you the weather has; been everything that could be wished for, in fabt people would think we were- well on in spring months instead of the depth of winter, . and the roads are drying up' fast,; which; helps to strengthen the delusion as to the season. ! .' i . ' ' . Business is brisk with everyone, and the : coal trade does not seem to diminish but, rather increase ; in fact two days last week ; they oould not get enough railway waggons, to Berve them. ...... .ATHBKiBDM MEETING, r _ j The meeting in connection witjh the above was held last Friday in the large readingroom. A large number of both subscribers, and public attended; as it was mooted two' or three days beforehand that the meeting, was to be of a lively oharaoter, and all those present were not disappointed, as it was one. of the warmest .meetings ever held in the; plaoe in the annals of Kaitangata. I am; aorry to say that the meeting was not without a certain amount (to speak vulgarly) of dirty linen washing, and as a certain Speaker remarked later on, that the room was full of; steam from the washing. ..Wbether.it was the heat of arguments or the heat of the lamps and fire and crush of people preßent I do not know, but your reporter was fairly stewed before leaving. • ACCIDENT. I am tforry to have to chronicle a bad aooident whioh happened here last Tuesday afternoon. Mr W. M'Aughern, while following his usual oocupation of miner in the Kaitangata Company's mine, through falling to snibble the, wheels of the truck got jammed between a pillar and the box with the result that one of bis legs was broken in two places and he was, besides, severely bruised. The officials of the Company lost no time in getting the injured man to his home, and f)r Fitzgerald, who had been sent for, was promptly in' attendance at the pithead and did all in his power to alleviate the sufferings of the injured man. Too much oannot be said in praise of the Company's officials, as scarcely an hour had elapsed from time of aooident till they got him home, the distance being very considerable. ■ • > JOOTINO3. ; Thonew bank is nearly finished and will be soon ooonpied. Messrs Auld and Son will soon be holding their winter sale on an extensive, scale. ,., Weshall.not recognise our former roads I when the new metal is laid. ?f^ ;; Still another new tradoimw about to atartaihopi -. \i "•■■'■'r^' r} --''' : :^Pii. .: ' Profesßor BlaokV leotttrei are In aid ql the •ohool groandt, jwii pr"Fitßgewld^ei^yM tht:*bi»k»: o! fli^^tfrtej^arWg v tiff H«fy|9«f |q |«sh « |qo4 timt.pil .** >..
