PROGRESS OF STIRLING.

AYe are pleased to notice that the township of Stirling is going ahead in a very satisfactory manner. Mr Gilroy is erecting a substantial dwelling-house on a section adjoining the Matau Bridge, and five new residences have been built on the north side of the railway within the last twelve months. Conspicuous among these is a seven- roomed house for the teacher of the school. We are givm to understand that Mr Allan Marshall intends shortly to erect a comfortable brick dwelling in this desirable locality. An influential meeting took place a few days ago, at Rae's Hotel, to consider tho advisibility of holding the annual plonghing match, when it was resolved unanimously that such match take place iv the immediate neighborhood of Stirling, about the middle of July. A number of paddocks were offered, and a Committee was appointed to select the moat suitable piece of

ground for the purpose. The Treasurer reported that a very favorable balance stood to the credit of the Committee, and it may therefore be fairly anticipated that the usual liberal prizes will be awarded. While writing about Stirling, we would suggest that the Volunteers take the necessary steps to have their drill-shed removed from its present isolated and dangerous position to a central part within the township of Stirling. Mr Houliston has just brought back his threshing machine, and has laid it up in ordinary, after having bagged over 50,000 bushels of grain in the various parts of the district. This iB by no means a small contribution for one machine. Messrs Smith Bros., Inglis, and Knox have gone largely into wheat sowing for the ensuing year, and an extensive paddock, belonging to the first-named gentlemen, presents a very promising and healthy appearance. It is evident that the settlers at Stirling are determined not to be left behind in the march of progress, and we congratulate them most heartily on their energy and enterprise.
