WHAT IS LOVE ?
What ia Live? J/*; I asked a pretty curly-headed child Placing upon the green--' ' He oped his bright blue eye?, and vacant smiled. /; Sor,kueWiWha,t,l might mean--That bright, yet vacant smile, said plain to me, "Love here hath never been. What ia Love? "' i: I asked a maiden aitting in her bower In seeming pensive thought— " OhJl Love's the priceless jewel of oir life, Not sold, or to be bought — It brightens all with loveliness most rare, The brighter if not sought." What is Lave ? I atked a youth on pressing to the goal Of aspirations high — . . " Oh I Love's a pleasant feeling while it lasts, Yet quickly passeth by — The depths and tenderness of love may come Unto me by-and-by." What ik Love ? I asked ajman, in manhood's summer prime, With wife and child at knee-*- --" Oh! Love is the fulfilment of our life, Ahd its fruition see In wife and child." I turned my face to her,-*-She smiled assent to me. What is Love ? Again I asked, an old aud careworn man, In whom the flickering flame Of humau life and passion seemed to stand At rest within his frame — j " Oh ! Love is an idea, nothing more — 'Tis but a fancy name." What is Love ? St.ll, still the question ever comes to me; I meet L <vv he* c an'? there ; — It stirs the breasts of king"?, and for their slaveg Lifts up a weight of care ; Yet lien*-- define it, tLongh its subtle power Extmileth everywhere.
