MILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

+ j The regular fortnightly meeting of the | Milton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, Milton, on Wednesday evening last. Preseut — R. R. Jones, | (Mayor), Crs Reid, M'Laren, Cunning- J ham, and G. Capstick. After the usual declaration, Mr George Capstick took his seat as a Councillor. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. COR t ONDENCE. A letter was read from the Returning Officer, reporting that Mr George Capstick had been duly elected Cr for West Ward. — Received. A COMPLAINT. The following letter was read : — Milton, January 22nd, 1879, To the Mayor and Council. Gentlemen, — Referring to a former letter of mine concerning the crossing to my property in Altred street, I now beg to inform you that the channel on my Bide of the street is about a foot lower than that of the other side ; consequently the gravel is always rolling from the crown cf the street, and from the footpath into the channel, walking on the footpath is very disagreeable in consequence of the extreme slope towards the channel. 1 therefore request you will give instructions to have the channel raised to its proper level as soon as possible. —l am, Ac, A. M'Laken". Cr Reid moved — " That the Surveyor inspect the street, with a view of carrying out the proposition. " Seconded by Cr Cunningham. The Mayor stated that ihe question had been spveial times before the Council, and it was high time something was done by the Council. Cv Lane said the same evil exists in other streets in the Borough • he referred to the recently formed portion of High street. — Motion carried. I A letter was read from the Treasury, Wellington, notifying that the sum of £1 12s 9d being local revenue, part of public account (weights and measures) had been paid to the credit of the Borough in the bank. — Received. ACCOUNTS. John Tough, contracts, £37 3s 2d; Powley and Grooves, supply of metal, £_17s6d; P Joues, dayman, £9 12s; 8. Archer, labour, £6 2s 6d ; D. Wilson, labour, £62s 6d. It was moved by Cr Reid, and seconded by Cr Lane — " That the above accounts be paid. -Carried. It was moved by Cr Reid, and seconded by Cr Bastings— " That Cr Capstick's notice of motion be considered at next meeting. — Carried . NOTICE OF MOTION. Cr Cunningham gave notice that he would move at the next meeting — " That the Surveyor be instructed to prepare specifications for channeling Cowper street on south side, and also filling in dangerous holes in same street, coiner of Johnston street, near Mr Kennard's house and property." THE DRAINAGE MA?. Cr Reid asked if any steps had been taken with reference to the drain near Mr Wilson's sawmill. The Mayor, in reply, staced that nothing had been done as yet, and until the Town Surveyor had prepared a map of the drainage scheme of the Borough, nothing could be done ; the map, he believed, was in course of preparation. It was moved by Cr Reid, and seconded

by Cr M'Laren—" That the Surveyo* be instructed to have the drainage map of the Borough prepaied, and laid on the table at next meeting."— Carried. The meeting then adjourned.
