NATIVE AFFAIRS.
• New Plymouth, January 24. Terunga, the head chief of Upper Mokau, and one of the highest chiefs by birth in the island, has arrived here, having recently been at Te Kuiti with Rewi. He says the Maniapoto Natives are very angry at the treasonable and lying reports, telegrams, &c that are being circulated by the ' New Zealand Times' and its correspondents in Waikato and Auckland, about Native matters, the natives in Waikato being constantly pestered with emissaries, political intriguers, and the agents of land rings, who get hold of a few discontented Natives to concoct plots and keep the ball rolling against the Government. Rewi's people having agreed to leave all matters to him and the Native Minister to arrange, they would gladly assist the Government to bring to justice the persons who are endeavouring to create trouble. One " Waikato correspondent," noted for his mendacity, was requested by the natives to make himself scarce at the
meeting three weeJii ago; The Maniapotds are aware that Dr Pollen, the late Native Minister, and now editor of the Wellington-' Times' has been for some weeks in Auckland while these false reports are being circulated. Teruoga' said the Natives desire to live as one people with the Europeans, and instances the result Jof the past year. If ' Tawhiao aud Sewi wore left alone by the newspapers and political disturbers, tbe desired end would be sooner arrived at.
