BANQUET AT INVERCARGILL.
» . — Invebcahgill, January 24. The Mayor and Corporation of Dunedin this evening invited their brethren of Invercargill and the members of the Reception Committee, and other prominent gentlemen, to a banquet at the Albion Hotel. About 60 gentlemen sat down to a first-class spread, provided br Host Heywood. JH is Worship the Mayor of Dunedin (Mr Walter), occupied the chair, and was supported by iVIr Eeldwick, M.H.R., and the Mayor of Invercargill. After the loyal and patriotic toasts had been honored, Mr Isaac, of Duuedin, pioposed " The Parliament." Mr Feldwick, in responding, referred in eulogistic terms to the General Assembly, and h:s remarks were frequently applauded, The Chairman proposed the toast of the evening — " The Mayor and Corporation of Invei cargill." He referred in very hi^b terms to the nianner in which the visitors had been treated in Invercargill, and pre> dieted for the town and district a great future. He denied that there was any jealousy between Dunedin ancl Invercargill. Ie was merely a spirit of laudable emulation to excel. Mr Lumsdec, the Mayor of Invercargill responded. Mr Goodwillie, of Invercargill, proposed ; * The Mayor and Corpo; ation of Cln*istchur<*h," coupled with the names of Messrs Wilson and Cas*-, of Ch rig teh inch. Mr Wi'son, in responding, made a lengthy sppecb, laudatory of Invercargill and the district. He predicted a glorious future for the town consequent upon the fertile nature of its lands. Invercargill compared favourably with Christchurch, and would yet be one of the first towns of Colony. Mr Cass also responded. The other toasts were : — *' The Railways in the Provincial District," proposed by Mr Gore, aod responded to by Mr J. W. Mitohell, of Invercargill • " The Reception Committee," proposed by Mr Carroll, of D'inedin, and responded to by Messrs M'Ewan and Goodwillie ; " The Agricultural Interests," proposed by Mr Thomson and responded to by Mr Hatch ; " The Ladies," proposed by Mr Doughty, and -esponded to by Mr M' Arthur ; and " The Press."
