♦ (From our own Correspondent). .After waiting. for the County Council to mend the footpaths. and clean out the. gutters that run through the township, the most, energetic of the citizens determined to wait 1 no longer but do the footpaths in front of their several properties themselves. Mr El-' iiott started first in the way of improvement, by putting a culvert across the main road to drain off his property. Mr Lunny was the next, aud put a drain in front of his hotel. Messrs Laidlaw and Barr took up the work and carried it past their shop. Next Mr t Winter did his part and the block was finished by Mr Monaghan, the bootmaker, doing his part The three last-named gentlemen have not put culverts in, and I cannot conceive where the water will go to in the wet weather, as the place is almost a dead level, rhe parties across the street will suffer most as the water will lie in their direction, as the ground is depressed that way. One thing is so urgently needed in our.rising district, that is the want of a medical n?an in our midst. Dr Menzies kindly attends to the most pressing cises free of charge, but he makes it distinctly known that he does not practice. lam sure if any medical man were to call once a week, or once "a fortnight, his services would be a boon to the district, and if made public, T.have no doubt it would pay him handsomely. v I am sorry to bave to report a case of very sudden death in our locality*. A little girl, three years old, daughter of Mr Brand, farmer. The child was* only' out of the house' iO minutes, playing with' a dbg, when the mother looked out'aricT saw her kneeling with her Head banging down. The mother ran and picked her up, when the child was fouud to be quite dead. The Coroner for the district . was telegraphed to regarding ah inquest, but he replied that there would be no need of an inquest, if there was no suspiction of foul play ; of course there was none, and the child was buried on Thursday. Much sympathy is felt ia the'district for the parents.
