NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. ', PBOSPECTUS 01 " ' '■ ' 'THE M AT ATIBA BNB I G N,' ■ ~ . • . . ' '■■ : ■„•'■. ,- *'■:■ °* ■'■■■■ •''-. - Southern Faka Pbbss, And Mataura Valley, Gore, Mataara Bridge, Wyndham, Toi Tois, Waimea, Waipahi. . Popbtvnoa, Waikaka, Otamete, Waikaia, Swifc*«M, Rye Birirt, and Nokomai REPORTER AND ADVERTISER. QUFFICIENT inducement* having bee* , M offered the first number of the MATAtraA Bmstcx isihtfw submitted to the public. The size is larger th an that at first contemplated for which we have to thank the support of advertisers, which rendered an enlargement of , our plans necessary. ■- The Projector feeling convinced that the interests of the several Townships, and the extensive and important Agricultural, Pastoral, and Mining Districts comprised within the far-famed and extensive Mataura Valley, now demand vthe advocacy of a Local Press, the want of which is recognised by all classes of the community ; hag, therefore, considerable confidence in nib* mitting the claims of his Paper to the attention and extensive patronage of the large arid rapidly increasing population comprised within our proposed field of operations, believing" that a well-conducted first-class Newspaper, "properly advocating the best interests of the District, will meet with the encouragement which its merits demand. The extensive experience of the projector in newspaper enterprise for nearly 20 years past is sufficient guarantee of the bona fides of the undertaking. Arrangements have been completed, which will enable us to preseiit our readers with the current news of the week, European, Colonial and Provincial, while correspondents have been appointed in the several rising Townships within the District, so / that subjects of local in- . terest in each, may always command our- best attention. Advantage will also be taken of the Electric Telegraph, for the receipt of the latest Home, Colonial, Dunedin, and Upcountry intelligence. - ( The rapidity with which settlement has recently advanced over the entire Mataura Valley if equalled, has certainly not been surpassed by any district in tbe'Colony whatever, nor will it yield to^any locality in the variety and extent of its resources. During the past sixteen years we have over and over again traversed the Mataura, from its source in the Wakatip District to its mouth, and are thoroughly acquainted with its varied resources, capable of development, in our opinion, to an extent now little thought or by its most enthusiastic advocate. There are many public questions to be discussed and enterprises to be fostered and developed calculated to meet I the requirements of a young community, and hence the absolute necessity for the establishment of a local journal, that will take its stand as the exponent advocate, and protector, of the residents in their Agricultural Pastoral, Mining, and Cpmmerciai pursuits, their varied requirements being sufficiently in common to meet with due expression in the pages of the same public organ. ' Our special attention will ever be devoted to tbe material advancement of the District, by watching over the disposal of Crown Lands, construction of Roads and Railways, Administration- of the Public Finances, and the expenditure of Public Monies in the District, needed public improvements, in the origination, and management of Municipal Affairs, Proceedings of the District School Committees, Mining Requirements and Improvemenisf with due representation in tbe Legislative Councils of the Colony, the revision of the entire Constitutional Policy of the Country &c , &c. are subjects upon which *n enlightened criticism will be brought to bear in the columns of the ' Mataura Ensign.' j In short, our object will be to render the ' Matat?»a Essign ' in every respect worthy of tbe District, and in order to carry out our project iv its entirety, a very considerable expenditure must necessarily be incurred, so that to ensure success, liberal support must be awarded : we are, however, persuaded that the whole community will fully appreciate our enterprise, aud that before many issues have appeared, the 'Mataura Ehsmht' trill have established itself as a worthy exponent of public opinion, and become a longed for and welcome weekly visitor to the home of each landed proprietor, cottager, and miner in the District. Tiie price of single copies of the 'Matayra Ensign,' is Gr», and the subscription 24a per annnm, payable- half-yearly in advance. Advertisements, single insertion, 3s per inch ; Business standing Advertisements by agreement. Duly authorised Agents have been appointed in the several Districts, for tbe receipt of Advertisements and Subscriptions ; - all communications for the Proprietcr or the Editor may be addressed to the office of the H MAXAU«A Ensign,' Gore, .c ? v _ Gobi JApril 1, "l^TSi - ' j' j ->-V^ll^^~-
