O wondrous tree ! whose branching roots Spread where thy crystal river heaves Its living fullness ; v and with i fruit» Perennial dowers thy bending shoots, Wave flags of life in all thy leaves— Thy very leaves. Where white-robed throngs, with tuneful thanks, Sweep through the street, where no on* grieves ; " - Between the broadway and the banks, O wondrous tree ! thy groups and ranks Wave flags of life in all thy leaves— Thy very leaves. O wondrous tree, ! a pictured year ! Each month a harvest ripe receives, While blossom opes ~, and bads appear, (Like blade, and ear, and corn in ear), And spring-like pulses in thy leaves— Thy very leaves. O wondrous tree ! unfading thou : „ Long as the living water cleaves The heavenly Eden, laden bough And verdant branch shall prove, as now, How deathless are thy very leaves— Thy very leaves. O glorious tree ! beneath thy shade, Like cherub's wings, like palace eaves^ For ever may my couch be laid, . - My path still through the peaceful glade, Where life drops down from all thy leaves Thy very leaves. Yet thee, O tree, no sun shines through, . Nor web of light and shadow, weaves ; The king's voice maketh all things new, Glory is round thee, in thee too, ' And Bprinklea in thy lustrous leaves — ' <- Thy very leaves. O glorious tree !.0 heavenly vine ? ' * - - O ancient seed, bursting to sheaves t * May thy blest spirit graft and twine ~ My soul with that great life of thine, Though but the least of all thy leaves— , Thy very leaves.
