A Typhoon.
;--Tbe' : DVquenfMe i^ky;'wh''it i ii" arrived at Wellington on the 7th, after having been blown away from the Heads, reports encountering a tremendous typhoon on the 4m h and sth and 6th August, in lat. 23.30 N. f long. 122.30 E. The ship was under storm canvas, -all doubly screwed on the yards, when the gale broke upon them... Every tiling movable on deck had been lashed extra fast. Soon after the first of the gale struck the ship, her mainsail (closed-reefed) and mainstaysail were blown to pieces. The ship was then brought up toithe wind under bare poles during the night, aud shipped a sea which broke the lashings of several casks, capsized the water casks, carried caE,ks of provisions overboard, shifted the water-tanks, and did a go6d : deal of other damage. The wind continued with unabated fury. On the sth one sea burst in the forward door., of the -.cabin and filling the cabin and forecastle With water, washing the man at the wheel to the top of the house. On the morning of the 6th rhe gale had reached, it height. It was impossible to look- to windward so blinding waa the rain, wind, and sea-foam. Ifc was impossible to speak or move. All that could be done was to hold on as tightly as possible, r ; andc great apprehensions were felt for the' safety of the vessel, as she was driving on toiand, the island of Formosa beisg on the lea, as well as could be reckoned, for no observation could be takenfpr three dayp, not having seen the sun or any stars. At nood on the 6tb, the gale commenced to take off, and all went to work bending new sails. E.rum^, this. time. the, w beather gradually improved^ During the lime the typhoon lasted the barometer kept going up ancl down three and four tenths. The Captain reports that while in Cook Strait he passed a barque which he took to be the German barque Diamont which left Foochow on Ist August. It is reported here that the Carl Ladwig for Dunedin, which left. the same, time as the May, has put into Yokohama disabled.
