(vi : a c^utifdpnijjle part of the ila\', of turning into a disayreciibie inisf. Ifuw ever, only a few drops of rain fell, and as the afternoon wore on, the threatening look of the sky in i've earlier part of the day passed off. Private carriages jyere conspicuous by thejr absence, and the grand stand was but po.orjj' piiirpnii-ed. At the time of the first race there jiiyst hgye been over JOQO present, uad later o» iv the day fker.e abput

3000 "on the ground. While there was not a ray of genial sunshine during the day, there was not that keen piercing wiud which often makes a day on the Forbury Course so comfortless. The course was in good order, though somewhat soft. The usual interesting little games for relieving the never-failiug crop of Verdant Greens of their spare silver were fairly represented, and seemed" to be bringing in cash to their proprietors. The bookmakers had not much to do, but in the Selling Race they made a fpretty tidy haul. Concerning the races themselves : — For the Maiden Plate Mr A. Smith's Sultan was most fancied, and, as the result of the running proved, with judgment, as the race was his own. The Trott ng Race was one that upset the calculations of many, everyone appearing to look upon the event as a certainty for Magic, whereas when Polly who, by-the-hye, had 150 yards start — passed the winuing- post, Mr Doclson's g. g. was a good 100 yards behind. The Birthday Handicap was remarkable for a splendid struggle at the finish between Tadmor and Glengarry, which resulted in Tadmor being landed a winner by a length. The Selling Race was .\ capital contest, there being a most exciting struggle down the straight between Fox and Swaggerer ; but the Fox was not to be passed, and reached the post with a short half length to spare. In the Tradesmen's Handicap, Rob Roy took the lead at tiie start, and kept it easily throughout, Tadmor (who was heavily weighted) being second. The Consolation was a fine race between Glengarry and Haphazard the whole distance ; and when near home Glengarry made a grand rush, coming in a winner by a length. The following is a detailed narrative of the several events : — Maidex Plate, of 35 soys. «^ne mile and a quarter j weight forage.
