BALCLUTHA.

There was great excitement over the Mayoral election at Balclutha on Tuesday. Mr Grigor's men had the advantage of carriage conveyance ; Mr M'Donald's trap, hired from Mr Philp of Tokomairiro, having been got at by some ingenious person and the caps of the axles removed, bo as to render it useless. At 4.30 p.m. the result of the pell was declared to be — Gi'igor ... ... ... ... 72 Macdonald .. .. ... 60 Majority for Mr Grig or ... 12 This announcement was loudly applauded, Mr Macdonald's supporters joining with the greatest fervor. In obedience to calls Mr Grigor came forward and said : — Gentlemen, — I have to thank you heartily for the position in which you have placed me to-day. 1 may Bay that I am taken somewhat by surprise, as I scarcely hoped for such a favourable termination to the contest. 1 have to thank the opposition for the courtesy with which they have treated me ; in fact, the hearty style with which they pelted me with snowballs convinces me that they all like me ; and I' will tell you this gentlemen — (A voice : Perhaps you will be good enough to tell me where the caps of Mr Philp's buggy have been stowed away ? — Laughter) — I will tell you this, gentlenibn, that as far as I am concerned, friends and foes are all alike, and there is now no opposition, and I am sure you will not doubt me for a moment when T say that I will do all in my power for the good of the ratepayers as a whole ; and I know gentlemen, that you will all do the utmost in your power to assist me in furthering the progress of Balclutha during my term of office. I have only to add that I thank you all from my heart.
