Second Day. — Friday.

If any thine;, the attendance was larger than on the preceding day ; the weather equally fine, and the races splendidly contested, the only fault being that they were protracted till too late an hour, especially for those who had_a distance to go home. The first race was the Flying Handicap, and the time in which it was done did not belie its name, as it came within half a second of the Melbourne time in a similar distance race on New Year's Day. The start in the Tuapeka Jockey Club Handicap was a wretched bad one, and Backbiter required all the advantage to land him winner, although he answered very gamely when called on at the finish. The Hack Race was a good one, all the horses going well together till close on the finish, when Sultana proved victor in the two first heats, Playboy and Rufus being first and second in first heat, and exactly vice versa in second. A protest against Sultana, as not belonging to the district within 20 miles of Lawrence having been sustained, Playboy and Rufus had to run the third heat, and made as nice a finish in favor of the former as if the}' had been doing their utmost — sufficiently fast to make the race look respectable. For the Publicans' Handicap, Yatterina, Duchess, and Catapult were scratched. Slander won this event, perseveringly and closely followed by Foretop and Backbiter. We fancy had Slander's rider pursued the same tactics yesterday as in today's racing, and come through the other horses on "the hill opposite the stand, she would have won the Lawrence Handicap. For the Consolation there were three entries. This race was won by Catapult, but had it not been for some loose horses on the course baulking Yatterina, about "half-way round, we believe it would have been a very close affair. Catapult can go a little bit with G stone, but give him more than .-mother half stone and he may as well stop at home. The horse runs well and game, but he cannot cany weight.

Flying Handicap, of 35 soys. ; distance, one mile.

Backbiter getting about 30 yards away before the rest, and was never caught, although Yatterina did her best and made it very warm for the old horse. Patch canio in a good third, and from his turn of speed, had he negotiated his hurdles properly yesterday, he must have been very close for that event. The third heat, was run comfortably, and as it was reported that the horses belonged to master and servant — if it was — then creditably' so, inasmuch as the public had a close finish at a fail' pace and Play Boy won. Publican's Handicap, of 50 soys. ■; distance, one mile and three-quarters. Walter's b m Slander, aged ; Sst 101 b (French) 1 Pritchard's y h Foretop, 6 years ; 7st 91b (Pearson) 2 Robinson's blk g Backbiter, aged ; Pst (Gibbs) 3 Ray's ; b g Maniototo, 3 years, 6st 4lb 0 Yatterma, Duchess, and Catapult were } scratched.

A fair- start was effected, Slander, Fore top, and Backbiter keeping well together. At the back of the course Slander drew away from the other two, but at the distance the cry was -Slander - was beaten, she, however, came away again, winning a good race by half a length. — Time, 3 mm. 16i sees. Consolation Handicap, of 30 soys. ; for all beaten bovses : distance, one and a half mile ; entrance, one guinea. i Coombe's b g Catapult, 6 years ; 6st 21b (Cotton) 1

Walter's b m Yatterina, G years ; Bst 121 b (French) 2 Schluter's b g Salamander Sam, 6 years ; 6st - ... .. (Malone) 3

A good start was effected, arid had it not been for the baulk Yatterina met with, the close finish that must have ensued would have redounded to the credit of the handicappers.— - Time, 2 mins. 51 sees. .
